Project Overview
Top Garden Services were called to a college site in Essex after a large limb from a mature Oak tree suddenly failed during a summer storm. The Oak was in full leaf, and following heavy rain and high winds, one of its branches became too heavy and snapped.
This created an immediate safety concern, especially as TFL (Transport for London) were due on site that same day to run a lesson next to the railway tracks bordering the college.
Location
Essex – College Grounds Tree Surgery
(Serving Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Essex)
Site Challenges
- Oak tree limb snapped due to sudden limb drop
- Location close to railway tracks, requiring urgent clearance
- Immediate deadline with TFL teaching session planned that day
- Wet, heavy timber difficult to manage safely
Our Solution
Our team mobilised quickly to make the site safe. We dismantled and removed the broken limb using professional cutting and rigging techniques, while working carefully near the railway boundary.
We also inspected the remaining Oak to check for further risks of sudden limb drop and advised the college on an ongoing management plan for the tree.

Results
- Fallen limb removed the same day
- Site made safe before TFL lessons began
- No disruption to college activities
- Risk reduced for staff, students, and visitors
- Timber cleared and recycled responsibly
Emergency Tree Surgery for Schools and Colleges
Sudden limb drop is a common issue with mature trees like Oaks, especially in summer when they are in full leaf. After heavy rainfall, branches can become waterlogged and snap without warning.
Top Garden Services provides emergency tree surgery and site clearance for schools, colleges, and councils across Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire.
