Client & Project Background
Top Garden Services was commissioned by a local parish council to plant a new hedge as part of a wider initiative to create a Garden of Reflection for the community. This project aimed to transform the space into a peaceful and welcoming environment, offering visitors a place for quiet contemplation while enhancing the overall landscape.
A key requirement of the project was to establish a natural boundary that would not only provide structure and privacy but also contribute to local biodiversity. The hedge needed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment while requiring minimal long-term maintenance.
Challenges & Issues
As with any landscaping project, there were specific challenges that needed to be addressed to ensure a successful outcome:
- Soil Quality & Site Conditions: The hedge was to be planted adjacent to a newly laid tarmac area, which posed potential issues with soil compaction and drainage. Preparing the soil correctly was essential to ensure healthy root development.
- Fast Establishment & Low Maintenance: The hedge needed to take root quickly to create an immediate visual impact while remaining easy to maintain for the parish council’s groundskeeping team.
- Durability & Wildlife Benefit: The hedge had to be hardy enough to withstand local weather conditions while also supporting biodiversity by providing shelter and food for birds and insects.
Our Approach & Solution
To address these challenges and meet the parish council’s expectations, Top Garden Services implemented a carefully planned approach:
- Structural Support: A sturdy wire fence with wooden posts was installed to provide support for the young hedge as it establishes and grows.
- Selection of Native Hedging Plants: A mix of native species was carefully chosen to ensure resilience, seasonal interest, and benefits for local wildlife. The selected plants were well-suited to the local soil and climate conditions.
- Soil Preparation & Enrichment: The soil was properly aerated and improved with organic matter and nutrients before planting. This step ensured the hedge would establish a healthy and robust root system.
- Mulching for Moisture Retention & Weed Control: A thick layer of mulch was applied around the base of the plants to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Results & Client Satisfaction
The successful completion of the hedge planting delivered several key benefits:
- The newly planted hedge provides a natural and attractive boundary, complementing the overall design of the Garden of Reflection.
- As the hedge matures, it will develop into a dense green screen, enhancing privacy and shelter for visitors.
- The parish council was highly satisfied with the quality of work, and the garden is already being enjoyed by local residents.
- The hedge will serve as a valuable habitat for birds and pollinators, contributing to local biodiversity.
Local Impact & Future Maintenance
This project reinforces Top Garden Services’ expertise in sustainable planting and community-focused landscaping. We will continue to provide maintenance guidance to the parish council, ensuring the hedge remains healthy as it grows.
As the Garden of Reflection continues to develop, this hedge will become an integral feature of the landscape, providing beauty, structure, and environmental benefits for years to come!
